There are two types of nutrition depending on the type of matter obtained:
- Autotropic nutrition: they obtain inorganic materials from the environment which they transform into organic material. It is typical of plants, algae and some bacteria. Through the process of photosynthesis, they create organic matter. This process takes place in the chloroplasts.
- Heterotrophic nutrition: they have to take organic matter from the environment. Examples: animals, fungi, protozoa and some bacteria.
