NUTRITION

Organisms need matter and energy.

There are two types of nutrition depending on the type of matter obtained:

  • Autotropic nutrition: they obtain inorganic materials from the environment which they transform into organic material. It is typical of plants, algae and some bacteria. Through the process of photosynthesis, they create organic matter. This process takes place in the chloroplasts.

  • Heterotrophic nutrition: they have to take organic matter from the environment. Examples: animals, fungi, protozoa and some bacteria.

Depending on the type of energy obtained, there are:
  • Cell respiration: consists of using organic matter to produce energy. This process takes place in the mitochondria. During cell respiration cells take in O2 and they release CO2.

  • Fermentation: for example yeasts.
